Project Details

In autumn 2021, residents and community members voted on which sculpture they'd like to see at San Pablo Ave and San Gorgonio Way roundabout. Sunburst by Donald Gialanella (shown below) was selected, and the Palm Desert City Council awarded the contract for fabrication and installation in November 2021. Starting in mid-October, foundation work and sculpture installation will take place. Due to the complexity of this effort, the project has three phases, all of which the City is working to make succinct to incur the least amount of disruption for local businesses, residents, and commuters. Information on the project's timeline and various phases can be found below.

This page will be updated weekly, so check back for the most recent news, and if you have a question, we encourage you to use the tools at the bottom of this page. Timeline

  • Project will take place from August 2023 to November 2023
    • Phase 1: Complete
    • Phase 2: October 16 - 27, 2023
    • Phase 3: November 7-11, 2023

Phase 1 - Complete

  • Coachella Valley Water District (CVWD) have relocated the water lines in the roundabout.
  • To report a water outage, please contact CVWD at (760) 398-2661 ext. 3508 and publicinfo@cvwd.org.

Phase 2 - October 16 - 27, 2023

  • This stage will include pouring concrete for the foundation of the Sunburst sculpture. Minor traffic delays may occur.
  • If you have an issue during this phase, please contact the City at (760) 776-6493.

Phase 3 - November 8 - 13, 2023

  • This stage will include the construction and installation of the Sunburst sculpture.
  • The roundabout intersection at San Pablo and San Gorgonio will be closed to traffic on 11/3/2023, starting at 7:00 a.m. Business along San Pablo will remain open, but traffic will be diverted at Alessandro Drive. The City looks to reopen this area to traffic by the early afternoon that same day.
