This September, the City of Palm Desert is supporting FIND Food Bank for Hunger Action Month. Hunger Action Month is an annual nationwide campaign to raise awareness and take action to fight hunger in the United States. For many, a daily meal is a choice between food and other crucial needs. FIND Food Bank helps feed 150,000 people each month struggling to make ends meet, and they need you to take action to Leave No Local Hungry.

In support of Hunger Action Month, for the month of September the City Council Chambers will light up every evening in orange along with other cities throughout the Valley. Orange is the color of hunger awareness because it stands out when hunger does not.

Edible Food Recovery

To reduce unnecessary food waste and help address food insecurity, SB 1388 requires that by 2025, the State of California recover and redistribute 20 percent of edible food that would have otherwise been sent to landfills. To meet this requirement, Edible Food Generators are mandated by SB 1383 to recover and donate the maximum amount of food possible for human consumption. The mandate went into effect for Tier 1 Generators on January 1, 2022. Tier 2 Generators will be required to follow these mandates beginning January 1, 2024. The City is working with FIND Food Bank to assist both Palm Desert’s Tier 1 Generators with meeting this requirement and the City with meeting its required food donor monitoring.
