In February 2022, during the City Council’s Goal Setting Study Session, Environmental Initiatives were highlighted as a priority for 2022. City of Palm Desert staff developed a new plan and strategy to replace the outdated Environmental Sustainability Plan that was adopted in 2010 and updated in 2015.

The proposed Environmental Initiatives Plan (EIP) was developed by inventorying current internal sustainability-related projects, as well as researching other cities’ plans and projects. As part of the plan, staff developed a project tracker. This tracker is a living document where City-wide sustainability-related projects will be added regularly. Additionally, staff will monitor utility usage and costs and greenhouse gas (GHG) metrics and report on progress both quarterly and annually.

The City Council formally adopted the plan on August 25, 2022. One recommendation in the plan is that , within 12-18 months, staff will seek a consultant to conduct a best practices review to determine if any additional items should be considered for inclusion in the plan. It is estimated that it will take three years to fully implement the current and potential projects outlined in the plan. After three years, staff will evaluate the plan’s standing and determine the next steps.
